Nursing background

Glyn Scott"I qualified as a registered general nurse having undertaken three years of orthodox training in Glasgow. Although this seems like yesterday, I’m shocked to think that it was eighteen years ago!

A move to intensive care followed this, along with training in critical care and the start of my formal academic life, with degree studies at the University of Paisley.

I’ve then been fortunate in being able to move around the United Kingdom gaining experience in a variety of trusts, working with some fantastic teams and expanding my knowledge and adding in more study. Most recently this has been on the MSc Advancing Healthcare Practice programme run jointly by the Royal College and Open University.

I’ve now moved out of the critical care setting, and for the last three years have been a clinical co-ordinator at the General Hospital, Jersey. This is partly a clinical role combined with managing site services across the acute setting.  It also allows me to meet nurses of all grades from all areas as part of my normal working life.

Royal College of Nursing

At branch level I have served as a steward and member of the Nurses and Midwives Joint Executive. This has given me an array of experiences from involvement in the process of grievance and appeal surrounding the implementation of a previous pay structure to being part of the process of setting policy and the direction of our local nursing strategy.

Most importantly, being a steward has let me see just how valuable the RCN is to members, who rely on the College to support them and give them a voice often at difficult times in their careers.

I hope to carry on doing exactly that by representing the Channel Island branches on the South East Board, and further strengthening the role of the College ‘off shore’ in what can be both a unique and challenging environment for nurses."
