Task and finish groups are time-limited groups of RCN staff, RCN members and external advisers who work together to fulfil a specific brief. Below you can find information on groups which are currently appointing members.

Violence against women and girls/children task and finish group

The RCN invited applications to serve on a task and finish group on violence against women and girls/children. The deadline for applications was 8 July 2011. 

The remit of the group is to implement agreed key recommendations for the RCN in support of the Taskforce on the Health Aspects of Violence Against Women and Children's report Responding to violence against women and children – The role of the NHS (available from the Department of Health website). 

The report made 23 recommendations and the RCN has agreed to deliver on three priorities, which form the brief for this task and finish group.

  1. To raise awareness of all forms of violence and abuse through sign-posting to existing resources and information e.g. through online resources, the Learning Zone and member/activist sites.
  2. To develop practice-based resources for members on leadership, learning and development to support identification, response to disclosure, and referral.
  3. To work in partnership with employers to meet the needs of members who are victims of domestic or sexual violence.

The task and finish group will report to the Nursing Practice and Policy Committee (NPPC) and the chair of the group will be Saffron Brown, Student Member of RCN Council.

Multimedia advice for people with long-term conditions task and finish group

This task and finish group will undertake a review of existing guidance on setting up telephone and other remote support for people with long-term conditions and then produce a suite of practice standards covering:

This project will commence in July 2011 and will be completed in March 2012, and will consist of three face-to-face meetings. The practice standards will be launched at RCN Congress in May 2012.

Disability and nursing careers task and finish group

The RCN Diversity Committee is setting up a task and finish group to look at how the impact of disability on the careers of nurses can be reduced. This follows the emergency matter for discussion 27E at Congress 2010.

Fair care for trans people task and finish group 

The RCN Diversity Committee is setting up a task and finish group to look at how equitable care for trans people can be realised, particularly in light of cuts to health budgets. This follows resolution 3 at Congress 2010.

Pay negotiating/collective bargaining strategy project task and finish group

The Membership and Representation Committee (MRC) is setting up a task and finish group to develop a framework of principles to inform the RCN's future bargaining on pay and conditions in both the NHS and independent sectors.

MRC Chair Tracey Budding is keen to ensure that this group is representative of members working in different sectors and from the devolved administrations, has involvement from nurses and health care assistants from a range of different professional backgrounds, and includes active representatives.

This is an exciting opportunity to help decide the RCN's approach to pay bargaining in the challenging times ahead. Tracey is determined that the group will be fully inclusive and to help participation much of the work will be done by email and telephone, avoiding having to take time out to attend meetings. We want to work smarter and more sustainably.

Task and finish group on independent sector strategy

The Membership and Representation Committee (MRC) is setting up a task and finish group to oversee the implementation of the recently launched employment relations strategy for the independent sector.

MRC Chair Tracey Budding is keen to ensure that this group is representative of members working in different sectors and from the devolved administrations, has involvement from nurses and health care assistants from a range of different professional backgrounds, and includes active representatives.

Task and finish group on spirituality

The RCN is inviting nominations to serve on a time limited task and finish group addressing the issue of spirituality.  The task and finish group will report to the Nursing Practice and Policy Committee (NPPC) and the chair of the task and finish group is Professor Wilf McSherry, Professor in Dignity of Care for Older People at Stafford University.
