Professor Janet Marsden

Candidate Email Address: j.marsden@mmu.ac.uk

I've been a member of the RCN since a student. Its combined professional and union focus was its attraction, and it still is. My commitment to the RCN has been demonstrated over 25 years through work as a forum and committee member and chair and now as a board member.

I've extensive experience of the organisation and recent work has included leading the development of a publication on CPD, the largest collaboration in the RCNs history, contributed to and endorsed by 14 professional organisations and unions including UNISON.

I work in education, as Professor of Ophthalmology and Emergency Care and retain a contract in practice. I'm passionate about nurses and all areas of nursing practice, representing the RCN on a number of national and governmental groups and involved in policy making in both ophthalmology and emergency care.

I work well as both leader (in practice, education and the RCN) and as a team member and have trustee roles in AHPO and the Scout Association so I'm also aware of council members' responsibilities.

I'm a fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine (an unusual honour for a nurse) and was delighted to be voted one of the 20 most influential nurses in the history of the NHS in 2008. This year, I was amazed and honoured to be awarded a Fellowship of the RCN.

My main focus throughout my career has been about making a difference and I'm convinced that I can continue to do that very effectively as council member.
