Janet Marsden
Seat: North West
Nominated by: Yvonne Needham and Sandra Taylor (Ophthalmic Nursing Forum)
I’ve been a member of the RCN since a student. Its combined professional and union focus was its attraction, and it still is. My commitment to the RCN has been demonstrated over 25 years through work as forum and committee member and chair, board member and for the past year, North West Council member and Regional Board chair.
I work in education, as Professor of Ophthalmology and Emergency Care and retain a contract in practice. I’m passionate about nurses and all areas of nursing practice, representing the RCN now and previously on a number of national and governmental groups and involved in policy making in both my specialist and other areas of nursing. Last year I was amazed and honoured to be awarded Fellowship of the RCN for my work in these areas.
I’ve extensive experience of the RCN and through recent work on CPD, have links with a large number of health related professional and trades unions. I work well as both leader (in practice, education and the RCN) and as a team member and over the past year have had experience of various RCN council committees and council work. My previous focus on the professional activity of the RCN compliments the extensive representation experience of fellow council members.
My main focus throughout my career has been about making a difference, for nurses and in practice and I’m convinced that I can continue to do that very effectively during a full term as council member for the North West.
