Candidate statement

I am passionate about nursing and the positive difference it can make.

My nursing career tracks back to 1979. Working through rank and file with experience in the acute, learning disabilities and mental health specialities, I have acquired vast knowledge and skills in nursing, which assisted me as a senior clinical lead for nursing in my team.

I joined the RCN as a member in 1985; become a steward & activist in 1994 and H&S representative in 2001. Over the years, I have and had the privilege of holding various positions in the RCN as national committee member, regional board member, branch chair and treasurer. This provides me a good understanding of local, national and international issues on nursing and healthcare. I receive the long service award from RCN for long established service to members.

Nursing is facing a challenging time. Pension, pension age, cutbacks, down-banding, non-NHS providers and negative nursing image portrayed by media are some of the important issues confronting nursing. My years of experience as staff-side representative in negotiation of pay, working conditions, policies & procedures to improve the working lives of staff equips me with the skills to influence and acquire a positive outcome through tough negotiation.

The knowledge and skills I have gained through my varied professional roles and involvement with charitable voluntary organisations as chair, director and trustee enhance the attributes required of a council member.

I will be delighted to represent you on the RCN council if elected.
