RCN Council elections 2013
Nominations are now open for seats on RCN Council.
RCN Council is responsible for the overall governance of the RCN, making sure that the College is meeting its objectives of championing nursing and fighting for the rights of members. This is your chance to take on this prestigious role and make a difference at a time when nursing is facing some of its biggest challenges for decades.
There is one seat up for election in each country and region in the UK.
When are the elections?
22 April 2013 - Opening of nominations
17 June 2013 - Close of nominations
18-27 June 2013 - Verification that candidates are eligible to stand
28 June 2013 - Publication of candidates details on website
31 July 2013 - Dispatch of voting papers
18 September 2013 - Close of voting
22 September 2013 - Announcement of results
16 October 2013 - New members take up office at AGM
Can I stand?
Any member wishing to stand for election shall:
a) be a member of the nurse category of the RCN.
b) have their workplace address in the country or region for which they are standing.
c) be a current member of the RCN for at least three consecutive years immediately prior to the closing date for nominations.
d) not hold office in any organisation which competes with the RCN for members or which, in the opinion of Council, propounds policies which are in conflict with the main objects of the RCN's Royal Charter and its overall philosophies.
e) not held a substantive salaried contract of employment or a fixed term contract in excess of six months with the RCN during the two years prior to the election period.
f) declare their ability and willingness, if elected, to fulfil the role and commitments as set out in the role description and to adhere to all RCN policies.
g) have discussed the implications of standing for election with their employer and confirm that their employer is willing to support them in carrying out this role if they are successful.
h) have discussed and agreed with the RCN in advance of submitting their nomination any special requirements they may have to enable them to fulfil the commitments of the office.
How do I stand?
Nominations are now open and close on 17 June 2013. Please complete and submit one of the forms below:
As part of the application, you will be asked to provide information to support your nomination including:
• information about their professional career
• information about their RCN career
• a 250 word statement explaining how they meet the requirements of the role.
Each nomination must be supported by two officers from any of the following:
• branches in the country or region concerned
• UK forums of the RCN recognised by Council.
For the purposes of the election officers shall be deemed to be the chair, vice-chair, secretary, convenor or treasurer of a branch or any committee member of a UK forum.

Term of office
The terms of office will be from 17 October 2013 to 31 December 2017.
