Professor Kevin Gournay

Kevin Gournay was awarded Fellowship of the Royal College of Nursing in 1998 for his important contribution to education, research, policy and practice development in mental health nursing.
Kevin has been a Professor of Psychiatric Nursing at the Institute of Psychiatry, King’s College London since 1995 and has been responsible for a very wide range of research, policy and practice development in mental health nursing.
Kevin was one of the country’s first nurse therapists, trained at the Maudsley Hospital in the 1970s and, for the past 30 years has combined an academic life with a clinical practice as a nurse therapist and psychologist, specialising in the cognitive behavioural treatment of a range of mental health problems, including panic attacks, obsessive compulsive disorder and schizophrenia.
He has been responsible for a number of initiatives that have improved nursing care, including the Guidance on the Observation of Patients at Risk, published by the Department of Health in 1999, the UKCC Report on the Management of Violence in Mental Health Settings, published in 2001 and, recently, as chair of the NICE Guidance on the Short Term Management of Disturbed/Violent Behaviour in Mental Health and Emergency Settings.
Kevin has served on numerous government bodies and was recently Special Adviser to the UK Joint Parliamentary Committee on Human Rights. He is President and founding Patron of No Panic, the UK’s largest anxiety disorder, self-help charity. Among his various honours, he is Fellow of the Royal College of Psychiatrists, a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences and was elected Nurse of the Year by the American Psychiatric Nursing Association in 2004.
Kevin is an accomplished marathon runner and 50-year plus supporter of Charlton Athletic Football Club. He was appointed CBE in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours in 1999.
