Gary Jones
CBE FRCN FFNF
Gary Jones was awarded Fellowship of the Royal College of Nursing in 2002 for his outstanding contribution to the development of emergency nursing practice. Gary is currently Convenor of RCN Fellows.
Gary is a self-employed trainer running a very successful training and development service from his home in Grays Essex. Gary and his colleagues provide a range of health care training packages for the NHS and first aid training in both the NHS and private sector.
Within the field of emergency nursing, Gary has brought influence and innovation at local, national and international levels. As an exceptional clinical leader, he has been instrumental in spearheading change, helping to attain significant milestones in nursing practice. His notable achievements include the research and development of the Jones Dependency Tool, which measures adult patient dependency in the emergency department. This emanated from his previous work to devise the Components of Life Model or Jones Model of Nursing. No other model or dependency tool for emergency nursing has been used or validated in the same way.
Perhaps most importantly, over the last few years, Gary has been at the forefront of work to develop his original idea of a faculty concept within the RCN. This unique major project integrates practice, education, research and policy and is set to fundamentally change emergency nursing in the UK. It provides a framework for a clinical career pathway linked to clinical competencies for emergency nurses. The Faculty was launched at RCN Congress 2002 and now has over 1000 members. His work has received support from clinical nurses within emergency nursing – the pilot study involved more than 100 A&E nurses – and attracted much interest from institutions outside the RCN.
Throughout his career, Gary has shared his knowledge, lecturing in the USA, Singapore, Hong Kong and Australia. In 2002 he was invited by the Singapore Emergency Services to undertake a lecture tour of all key hospitals and provide advice regarding development of emergency nursing services in the country.
His clinical expertise is widely sought and his innovative work has been adopted and adapted by nurses from all fields of practice. As a consultant, his services have been engaged by a variety of bodies, including universities, NHS trusts, the Department of Health and the popular BBC television drama series, Casualty. Within the RCN, he has been involved with the RCN A&E Forum since 1983, serving as its Chair from 1987 to 1995. He was Vice Chair of RCN Council from 1997 until 2001 and has chaired a variety of RCN working parties. In 1995, he was honoured with a Fellowship of the Florence Nightingale Foundation and in 2003 was awarded a CBE for services to emergency nursing.
