Elizabeth Raybould
OBE, FRCN
Elizabeth Raybould is an eminent nurse educationalist who played a pioneering role in implementing a new organisational structure for nursing education in Northern Ireland.
Her contribution to nursing education has been wide ranging, but her outstanding characteristic has been her ability to implement new concepts, to promote developments, to manage change, and to achieve a successful outcome in a relatively short period of time. Her main interests were libraries in schools of nursing, the history of nursing, the development of nursing as a profession, and the preparation and training of safe practitioners.
Elizabeth retired in 1983 and is proud of the contribution she made to nurse education for some 25 years, particularly of helping to change the status of the learner from apprentice-based learning to student status. She was inspired by so many nurses, particularly the great leaders Virginia Henderson and Dame Catherine Hall.
She has seen huge changes in the nursing profession and hopes that in the future "all involved in care are properly prepared for the job they are required to do, remembering that the patient is the important person".
