MBE, FRCN

Susan Read became Professor of Nursing Research at the University of Sheffield’s School of Nursing in Midwifery in October 2003. She was awarded an MBE in January 2003 for services to innovation in health care, having been made an RCN Fellow in 2001.

Susan has recently completed a study on the implementation of the "modern matron" initiative funded by DH Policy Research Programme, with Sheffield colleague Mick Ashman, and Cherill Scott and Jan Savage of the RCN Institute. She is currently involved in a number of research collaborations; the most important is a project led by Professor Kate Gerrish that is investigating ‘Empowering front-line staff to deliver evidence-based care: the contribution of nurses in advanced clinical roles’. This is also funded by DH Policy Research Programme.

Susan is also involved with the Medical Care Research Unit at SCHARR, and the Institute of Work Psychology, University of Sheffield in four projects funded by the NHS or the DH Policy Programme:

  • Multi-centre evaluation of the role of chest pain observation units
  • Organisational factors influencing waiting times in A&E departments
  • Use of protocols in nurse-led care
  • Supplementary prescribing.

From 1997 to 2002 Susan was an elected member of the RCN’s Research Society Steering Committee. She was instrumental in bringing the Society’s Conference to Sheffield in April 2000 and chaired the organising committee.

Susan has been appointed as the University of Sheffield’s representative on the Governors’ Council for Chesterfield and North Derbyshire Royal Hospital Foundation Trust, from January 2005 for three years.

She lives in Derbyshire and further details of projects or publications can be requested by email at s.read@sheffield.ac.uk
