RCN Northern Ireland Library and Information Zone
The RCN offers a wide range of library and information services to members in Northern Ireland.
The Library and Information Zone was totally refurbished in March 2008. It has been transformed into a bright air conditioned work and social area which members have noticed:
"Excellent. Very helpful. Staff make literature searching fun!" Laura, January 2010.
"Library staff could not have been more helpful and patient to an older nurse struggling with new information technology." Rosemary, April 2010.
"Thanks a million! Will definitely come back to do further work on assignments." Deborah, May 2010.
"Wish I had made better use of these facilities years ago. This library is the perfect conducive learning environment." Becky, September 2010.
Available facilities
The library has five new computer desks with privacy and space, photocopier and print facilities, a quiet study corner and a social area with daily newspapers and coffee and tea facilities and a water cooler.
The library has access to the Internet including the RCN website and over 100 nursing journals. We also offer 5,000 books covering core texts for nursing students, nurses and health care assistants who are RCN members.
One to one help
Library staff offer a 'one to one' service. The two staff, Pauline and John, will be happy to help you with your queries and show you how to use our RCN eLibrary, online databases and resources.
Literature search service
As an RCN member you can request literature searches free of charge from library staff. This service is not available to our RCN student members but staff will happily show you how to do a literature search - just call in.
If you would like to request a literature search, telephone: 028 9038 4612/3.
Borrowing books
As a full member or a student member you may borrow up to six books at any one time. Books can be renewed by telephone up to three times before you need to return them to the library, as long as no-one has requested them.
You can search the RCN library service catalogue to find books. Read the Guide to the RCN Library Catalogue (Word, 209KB).
If the book is not in stock, library staff can request a copy for you from one of our UK libraries at no charge. If a book that you need is not available from RCN libraries, library staff may still be able to obtain it from the British Library at a cost of £4.00 per item.
Document delivery services
Obtaining photocopied articles from other RCN libraries is charged at £2.00 per journal article. Articles supplied by the British Library are charged at £5.00 per article.
If you would like journal articles to be sent to you, download and sign a copy
of the Belfast photocopy request form (Word, 40KB)
It is very important to ensure you sign the copyright declaration form by hand as this is required by law. You may return the form to the Library and Information Zone by post or fax.
