Parliamentary

RCN Northern Ireland maintains close links with the Northern Ireland Assembly and local political parties in order to represent and advance the interests of our members and to campaign on nursing and health issues.

We address these issues through regular meetings with the minister, senior civil servants and local politicians, lobbying on specific issues and through our involvement with political party conferences.

Devolved government

Devolved government returned to Northern Ireland on 8 May 2007, when the Northern Ireland Assembly and Executive were restored. The new Minister for Health, Social Services and Public Safety is Michael McGimpsey MLA.

Membership of the Northern Ireland Assembly Health, Social Services and Public Safety Committee has also now been confirmed.

The committee chair is Iris Robinson MP MLA (DUP) and the vice-chair is Michelle O’Neill MLA (Sinn Féin). The other members are Thomas Buchanan MLA (DUP), Rev Robert Coulter MLA (UUP), Carál Ní Chuilín (Sinn Féin), Dr Kieran Deeny MLA (Independent), Alex Easton MLA (DUP), Tommy Gallagher MLA (SDLP), Carmel Hanna MLA (SDLP), John McCallister MLA (UUP) and Sue Ramsey (Sinn Féin).
