David began his career as a registered learning disability nurse in 1987 and then in 1996 took further training and qualified as a mental health nurse. His current role is as a community psychiatric nurse in a primary care team working in GP practices.

When he started working for the NHS he became involved in trade union activity with his RCN local branch, and regularly attended their Executive Committee meetings. In 1994 he was elected as a steward and in 1997 as a safety and learning representative.

He has continued his involvement and commitment for the RCN locally as branch chair, regionally as chair of the Trent Regional Co-ordinating Committee and nationally, since 2001, as a member of the RCN UK Safety Reps Committee to the present day.
