Modernising Nursing Careers

The DH’s Modernising Nursing Careers (MNC) is a UK-wide policy document that establishes principles for the future direction of nursing.

Two significant consultations in relation to Modernising Nursing Careers were launched in November 2007: one from the Nursing and Midwifery Council regarding the future content and level of pre registration nurse education and the other from the English Department of Health regarding post registration career pathways.

The consultation has now closed. The RCN invited members to feed into the RCN response by sending in views/comments and by completing the questionnaires that were within each consultation document. You can view the RCN responses below:

RCN Policy Unit briefing on the two consultation documents from Modernising Nursing Careers (PDF, 69KB)

This Policy Unit briefing summarises the two consultation documents. It provides background and contextual information, and supports members in formulating their responses during the consultation process.

In preparation for the two consultation documents, the RCN put together the following two papers. Pre Registration Nurse Education: The NMC Review and Issues (PDF, 135KB) sets out the background to pre registration nurse education and identifies the review key issues and their implications.

Ensuring A Fit for Purpose Future Nursing Workforce is a personal view by Professor Dame Jill Macleod Clark on what future education, domains of practice and nursing career pathways should like and the rationale for change.

The papers should be read together as they will give the reader a good picture of what to expect in the forthcoming consultations.

Professor Dame Jill Macleod Clark, Deputy Dean of Faculty of Medicine, Head of School of Nursing & Midwifery, University of Southampton, has generated this paper to promote discussion and the views expressed are those of Professor Dame Jill Macleod Clark alone. This paper has been published on the RCN website in order to generate debate about Modernising Nursing Careers and the future for pre- and post-registration nurse education and career pathways.

The RCN Policy Unit has also produced a number of briefings and a discussion paper in relation to this issue and they are below:
