One of things which makes me proud to work for the RCN is its commitment to diversity. Plenty of staff attend Pride events – gay or straight. Over the last few months the RCN has been busy attending many of the Pride events across the UK. Our presence at these events are a key part of our recruitment and retention strategy as a great way to welcome and encourage LGBT people into the RCN.

Staff also support the LGBT Staff Network, which I chair. I’m really looking forward to the next meeting as we will be welcoming a new member to the group. The network is open to any staff member who identifies as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender. It’s essentially a forum to provide support to staff and share experiences while providing feedback to the RCN on LGBT equality and diversity issues.

There are other diversity networks that staff can join including Race and Culture and the Disability Network and they operate in a similar way. At the heart of all the staff network groups is a real desire to support staff to be the best they can be by bringing their unique skills to their role. For staff, it’s an opportunity to give something back to the organisation.

There’s no doubt in my mind that what makes the RCN such a great place to work is the strong culture of support and that fact that difference is genuinely celebrated.
