The Skills for Caring series
M&K Update
This organisation provides customised training and courses, including the Skills for Caring series of self-directed workbooks. Among them, three recently published titles are Loss and grief, The management of pain in older people and Interpersonal skills.
Each of the books provides a literate exploration of the nature of the topic, but has an immediate practical utility with a firm focus on assessment and management approaches.
Self-awareness is encouraged through the emphasis on reflective practice. The activities and exercises are short, which will encourage completion. Carrying out these undertakings is ably supported by reference to readily available texts as well as web-based materials where appropriate.
The books would be applicable to all types and grades of nursing, and I would see them having a definite role for supporting pre-registration, and pre-exposure, students prior to placement.
