Administering subcutaneous methotrexate for inflammatory arthritis. RCN guidance - new edition

Originally published in April 2004, this new edition has been updated and developed for use by all health care professionals working within primary, secondary and tertiary care settings. It will aid practitioners in the safe and effective administration and use of licensed subcutaneous methotrexate injections for a number of rheumatological conditions. Providing the most current evidence, this new guidance covers aspects of both adult and child/young people’s care, as well as providing a framework to help patients and their carers to administer treatment at home.

As Polly Livermore, Lead Author for the Paediatric Section highlights, “this new exciting document has many changes which should make the administration of subcutaneous methotrexate much easier for families and health care practitioners. Through advocating the use of a licensed preparation for Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis; the full use of personal protective equipment, spillage kits and the need for ‘chemo’ training have been dropped. These guidelines should enable health care practitioners to challenge and change current local policy to benefit all involved”.
