School Immunisation
Separate HPV and TDP school nursing protocols were last reviewed and ratified by SPCT clinical governance group in July 2010. In September 2011 practice is changing to combine the giving of both vaccines at year 8 in secondary school. This protocol is a combination of both previous documents to ensure safe practice within the school nursing service, to provide a clear framework that will support professional practice, and to ensure young people and their families receive an immunisation service of a consistent standard

HPV vaccination programme switching to Gardasil from September 2012
Professor David Salisbury has written to the NHS explaining that from September 2012, girls entering year 8 at school (i.e. aged 12 to 13 years) will receive three doses of Gardasil human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine instead of Cervarix.
- Girls who have started their course of Cervarix vaccinations this year (2011/12) should complete it with Cervarix
- Girls who miss out on any of their three vaccinations this year should complete their course with Cervarix next academic year (2012/13)
- Year 8 girls (aged 12 to 13) will receive Gardasil from September 2012
- Gardasil protects against two types of HPV virus (16 and 18) that cause over 70% of cervical cancer in England and two types of HPV virus (6 and 11) that cause around 90% of genital warts
