NSPCC EduCare Child Protection Awareness in Health and Social Care

Recently added to the Skills for Health Core Learning Unit's online learning system, this programme from the award-winning distance learning provider EduCare is available free to all members of UK strategic health authorities – and for a small fee to those outside SHAs.

The Core Learning Unit contains national, quality-assured online learning which delivers the core, statutory and mandatory skills needed for a safe, competent and legal health care workforce.

Child Protection Awareness in Health and Social Care has been written by the NSPCC and has already been undertaken by over 250,000 participants. It delivers the essential information you need to protect children in your care from abuse (physical, sexual, emotional and neglect). It will teach you about child development, how to recognise the possible physical and behavioural signs and indicators of abuse, and how to respond if a child discloses abuse to you. It also covers what to do if you have strong suspicions of abuse without a child’s disclosure. There is a module on reporting child abuse with a step-by-step action plan to follow and you will understand what happens after you have reported your concerns. You will learn the background to the legal child protection framework and key definitions and duties, as well as your role as a health professional. Patient confidentiality is covered, as is how to handle allegations against staff. The programme also contains signposts for further information to enable you to extend your knowledge.
