CYPCNC Sub Groups

The Children & Young Peoples Cancer Nurses Community has four additional sub groups which sit within its community.  These are the CYP Research Nurses, CYP Oncology Outreach Nurses, CYP Bone Marrow Transplant Nurses and CYP Cancer Nurse Education Group.

CYP Research Nurses

The Children & Young People's Research group has been running for 14 years and currently has over 40 members.  The group comprises specialist nurses providing services for children and young people diagnosed with cancer, who are registered onto a clinical trial.  These trials are either phase III (from point of diagnosis) to new agent trials - phase I and II (when no other conventional treatment is available).  Other work streams include support care, late effects and pharmacokinetic/pharmacogenetic studies.

Research nurses are mainly based at regional primary treatment centres, but infrastructure funding from numerous sources is enabling research nurses to be employed within shared care centres.  The posts have had a variety of financial sources including the NCRN, Cancer Research UK and Comprehensive Cancer Networks as well as charitable funding.

As the group has evolved and grown and as the numbers and types of trials the group are involved with are increasing; the group now meet three times a year.  The chair of the group is elected for a term of three years which can be extended for a further term.

Purpose

The group supports research nurses in the field of paediatric oncology working in any of the 21 centres within the UK on a practical and professional level by providing a network of contacts, in turn promoting liason within between hospitals and individuals so that information and problems regarding trials can be shared.  The group provides support and guidance for new research nurses and aims to address aspects of professional role development, education and accountability.

Aims

Membership

Open to any research nurse working on any of the portfolio of clinical trials for oncology and haematology.  For more information on the group and how to join, please contact chair Selena Peters.

Children & Young People's Oncology Outreach Nurses (CYPOONs) are based at either a regional primary treatment centre, a shared care centre or in the community.  The posts have a variety of funding resources including Macmillian Cancer Care and CLIC Sargent.  Many of the groups members provide a 24 hour on call service to support families in achieving home based end of life care.

The group meets as a whole once a year in london, normally in december and as four regional groups twice a year.  The chair of the national group is rotated between the chairs of the regional groups.
