RCN Education Forum community

This is the online home of the RCN Education Forum

The forum is relevant to all nurses who are involved with pre- and post-registration nursing education including continuing professional development. Nursing and nurse education are crucial to the successful delivery of effective health care and in these difficult times if you're not yet a member of the Education Forum, what are you waiting for?

RCN members can join up to three forums free of charge, and benefits include regular e-newsletters from the forum keeping you up to date on topics such as good practice and forthcoming events. Each forum also has its own area on the RCN's Discussion Zone where you can network with others in your specialty. To join just call RCN Direct on 0345 772 6100 - option 1.

NMC delay student indexing

The Nursing and Midwifery Council has announced that it will reintroduce student indexing in September 2012. The decision to extend the lead-in for the student index will give the nursing and midwifery regulator, and the universities that deliver nursing and midwifery education programmes, more time to develop and embed the index across their operations.

Student support

The outcome of the NHS Student Support (England) bursary discussion was announced on Monday 18 July. In essence, it will offer all  health care students on an eligible course of 45 weeks in duration and studying outside London a non-means-tested grant of £1,000, a means-tested bursary of up to £4,395 and a non-means-tested loan of up to £2,324.

This will only apply to students who commence their course on or after September 2012. Current students will remain on the same scheme they're on now. The RCN is assured that, at present, there is no intention by the Government to start charging fees for health care students. See more more information.

Dyslexia, dyscalculia and dyspraxia publications.

For many years the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) has recognised the impact of dyslexia, dyspraxia and dyscalculia on its members, and has sought ways of supporting individuals with these conditions to help them to reach their potential in whatever role or setting they work. In 2009 RCN Congress accepted a resolution which called on RCN Council to “influence employers to recognise and provide for the needs of nursing staff with dyslexia and similar conditions.” This led the RCN Nursing Department to commission an in-depth Dyslexia, dyspraxia and dyscalculia: a guide for managers and practitioners (pub code: 003 833) and an accompanying Dyslexia, dyspraxia and dyscalculia: a toolkit for nursing staff (pub code: 003 835). This summary contains excerpts from the more detailed guide, and is designed as a quick point of reference for managers.

Frontline First

On another note we know that lecturer posts are being cut and that this is already having an impact on education. Do tell us more about what is happening on our Frontline First website. This is confidential and it would be really useful to hear directly from you about what is happening out there - in as much detail as possible please.

We are always glad to hear from you on anything that is happening in your institution or area so do please get in touch

Best Wishes
