RCN Acute and Emergency Care Adviser: JP Nolan
How do you become a Steering Committee member?
The association's steering committee has places for seven elected members. In addition, the committee is supported by an adviser from the RCN's Nursing Department. This committee then can co-opt up to five more members on condition that they can rationalise why extra members are needed.
To become a member of the steering committee, you must be a current member of the RCN Emergency Care Association. Following a call for election, you then have to present a manifesto and, if there is sufficient competition, an election is held. Those with the most votes become members of the steering committee. If there are more places available than individuals interested, then those who apply are automatically given a place.
Commitments
Each member of the steering committee agrees to:
- attend a minimum of 75 per cent of all meetings or events (100 per cent = 20 days per year)
- determine the views of the association's members
- support and attend the annual conference
- support and attend the annual RCN Congress
- work at national level
- participate in the work of the steering committee
- provide comments for issues related to emergency nursing.
Restrictions
- Members hold office for a maximum of eight consecutive years, but have to be re-elected every four years.
- They cannot hold office in any other UK nursing membership organisation or UK health service trade union.
- They cannot hold office at national level in the RCN.
