Julian Newell
RGN RN(USA)
Lead Nurse - Emergency Nurse Practitioner - Emergency Department - Barnsley Hospital
Lecturer Practitioner for Nursing - Health and Wellbeing Faculty - Sheffield Hallam University
This year marks Julian’s 20th anniversary as a qualified nurse. He worked on a burns unit, medical and orthopaedic wards and a medical ICU before moving into emergency care 10 years ago at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. He returned to the UK in 2000 and has worked ever since in emergency departments at city teaching hospitals and district general hospitals.
Julian is interested in all areas of both paediatric and adult emergency care. He has a special interest in critically ill patients, whether traumatic or medical, looking at ways to improve their care and outcome while in the department.
He also has a clinical interest patients with severe sepsis, having worked with colleagues in critical care to introduce screening tools for sepsis and implementing early goal-directed therapy. He has co-authored articles on sepsis management and presented at conferences on the subject.
Julian is also an emergency nurse practitioner and he enjoys the challenges of autonomous practice in caring for patients with minor injuries and illnesses.
Julian continues to be enthused by working in emergency care and is excited by the opportunities for nurses as well as the challenges that can be anticipated in the future.
He lives in Sheffield with his wife and eight-year-old daughter.
