Richard Brownhill
Richard Brownhill has over 15 years’ experience in emergency care, though he acknowledges that time served isn’t always a good measure of skills and knowledge.
He currently works as a clinical development practitioner in the Calderdale & Huddersfield NHS Trust, which involves developing minor injuries practitioners within the Emergency Department as well as clinical work as an advanced practitioner. Having spent time working in eight departments, he feels he bring sa realistic and “hands on” approach to the committee.
Richard divides his time between shift leading, seeing patients independently and developing pathways/education to improve ways of working for staff. Interests include, teaching and skills acquisition, mental health and resuscitation
He has an MSc in Primary Care, working weekly as a nurse practitioner in general practice seeing undifferentiated, undiagnosed cases , using my prescribing skills where needed. He feels this broadens his experience and allows him to understand the interface of emergency and urgent care, highlighting some of the problems faced by professionals and patients.
He has just embarked on the RCN Political Leadership programme with a focus on adolescents.
Out of work, Richard uses his cookery and wine appreciation skills to enjoy life and loves to travel. However, his feet are kept firmly on the ground by his wife (also a nurse) and their three little girls.
He sees the future of emergency care as hugely exciting with nurses playing the pivotal role. He hopes that ECA members give the committee the chance to work with them to keep them positive, focussed and doing what they do best.
