A new e-health strategy for Scotland in spring 2008 is promised in a national healthcare action plan, Better Health, Better Care. The action plan says Scotland’s incremental approach to deploying technology will continue and the new strategy will build on this. “We do not plan to produce some large single database of patient information but will join up systems where there are clear benefits from doing so.” A pledge to continue support for the Scottish Centre for Telehealth is also included in the action plan. The centre will focus on telehealth applications in the areas of long term conditions, paediatrics, unscheduled care and remote and rural health care. The aim will be to make Scotland “a global leader in telehealth.”
Evaluation highlights early lessons on information prescriptions:The Department of Health (DH) should consider whether information prescriptions should be made a formal requirement, according to an interim evaluation of the scheme. The report looks at lessons learnt from the 20 sites currently testing information prescriptions ahead of DH plans to roll-out the scheme nationwide next year. From 2008 information prescriptions guiding patients to relevant resources are to be given to all patients with long term conditions. The interim evaluation found that national guidance on information prescriptions needed to be issued as soon as possible and that the DH needs to consider what funding will be available.
