Editorial

Interest in nursing, and more specifically learning disability nursing, has been high since the beginning of the year. The report of the Francis Inquiry into events at Mid Staffordshire NHS Foundation Trust and more recently the report of the Confidential Inquiry into Premature Deaths of People with Learning Disabilities both highlight the need for us to continue to reflect on what we do. But, as a very wise nurse once observed, this must not be a navel-gazing exercise.

As well as taking the work forward at a national level, it is vital that there is local ownership and that people are fully involved. Our first task was to develop a communication strategy and to ensure the report was disseminated as widely as possible, not only through events but also through the use of social media. There is a Facebook page and Twitter chat has proven to be brilliant at spreading the word. We are also about to survey all NHS services to determine local activity in response to the recommendations.

Twitter chats for learning disability nurses

LDnursechat is one dedicated Twitter chat that forms part of a larger #nursecommunity within the Twitter universe. Through fortnightly facilitated discussions, nurses, allied health professionals, educators and, most importantly, carers and people with learning disabilities are invited to discuss pertinent issues related to the care and effective management of the health needs of those with learning disabilities.
