The response to the consultation on the future of the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA) has been announced. The Government has decided that the functions of the HFEA will not be transferred to the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

Reviewing the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority code of practice

The HFEA has withdrawn the print version of its code of practice from circulation, as of this January. This will reduce the cost of updating the code and lower the chance of outdated versions being referred to for guidance by mistake. The next update to the code will be 1 October.

Training and accreditation of embryologists

The Department of Health (DH) is planning a programme of accrediting health care scientists called Modernising scientific careers (MSC). The course for embryologists is modular, centrally recruited and produces a hierarchy of trained embryologists from assistant to consultant level.
