Inclusion of an eye indicator in the public health outcomes framework
Published: 30 January 2012
On Monday 23rd January the Government will be announcing the inclusion of an eye health indicator in the Public Health Outcomes Framework.
This is a major breakthrough and the Government has recognized eye health as a public health priority. It is anticipated that the UK Vision Strategy will be included in the Ministerial statement.
Anita Lightstone (Programme Director UK Vision Strategy) stated that 'this major achievement demonstrates the power of partnership working and the successes it can bring'.
'We have spoken to the Department of Health this afternoon and our indicator is definitely included in the Framework, but some further amendments are still required'.
Mary Shaw (Ophthalmic Forum Chair) commented "this is a super outcome" and it reflects the efforts of Yvonne Needham who represented the RCN and ophthalmic nursing as a whole.
New eye care commissioning guidance will aid clinical commissioning groups to provide quality, cost-effective eye care services for their patients. Take a look at www.commissioningforeyecare.org.uk.
