Scotland update

Clare Mayo, RCN Scotland Policy Adviser, provides an update

In Scotland, work continues on the primary care quality strategy Delivering quality in primary care. The team from the Scottish Government is keen to come and talk to practitioners about progress so if you have an event, do get in touch on the email address below.

A very successful primary care fringe event was held at an NHS event in Glasgow at the end of August, attracting a good deal of interest from secondary care colleagues.  At that event, the RCN launched the Scottish version of the RCN Principles for Nursing Practice.  Do have a read of these, and if you’d like a poster or handy credit card sized reminder of the Principles then contact David Liddle on david.liddle@rcn.org.uk or 0131 662 6176.

The Scottish Government Modernising Nursing in the Community Board has convened a working group to develop a career pathway for general practice nursing.  There is good representation from RCN, SPNA and health board leads.  The framework should be ready in December 2011.

In addition NHS Education for Scotland (NES) is currently developing a co-ordinated network of general practice nurse (GPN) education advisors, led by a national co-ordinator (Susan Kennedy) based in Glasgow. The network aims to support GPNs with a robust model of education and improve the communication, visibility and credibility of the GPN workforce.

Don’t forget that if there are any issues you’d like to raise do get in touch with Kathy Kenmuir, your primary care representative on the RCN Scotland board, at Kathy.Kenmuir@ggc.scot.nhs.uk.

Alternatively contact clare.mayo@rcn.org.uk at the RCN office in Edinburgh.

We’d be delighted to hear from you.
