Criteria for assessing the treatment of prisoners and conditions in prisons

The first edition of Expectations, the standards against which the Prisons Inspectorate
inspects all prisons, was published in 2001. This is the fourth full edition to be
published. Each edition has been true to the principles that inspired the first but
has also reflected the Inspectorate’s growing experience and changes to the prison
environment in which it operates.
