Letter from the Editors (Spring 2009)
Liz Walsh & Emma Bradley
Since the new committee has only recently been elected, we're making our first newsletter a brief introduction to the team, highlighting current activity, upcoming plans and some key publications.
In future we hope to focus on practice issues, so do let us have your reflections on good practice, requests for information and any particular issues you want to see explored. We've already approached the Nursing and Midwifery Council regarding common themes, but it appears not many nurses in criminal justice services are contacting them. Do you use all sources of professional support available to you?
Fringe event at RCN Congress, 10-14 May
Check the Congress programme for the exact time and venue, then come along to Harrogate for a Q&A session with the new committee. This is an ideal opportunity to tell us what our key priorities should be.
Some recent publications:
- Chapter four of HM Inspector of Prisons annual report focuses on health care at: inspectorates.homeoffice.gov.uk/hmiprisons
- Health Care Commission and HM Inspectorate's joint report, Commissioning health care in prisons is at:
www.healthcarecommission.org.uk
Act now!
One last thing ... nurses working in criminal justice settings must publicise their good work. Too often, our messages to the wider nursing community and indeed the public portray a negative picture of health care in these settings so think about publishing examples of what you do best! And why not enter the Innovations in Criminal Justice Nursing category in the Nursing Standard Awards? More at: www.nurseawards.co.uk , but hurry - closing date is 10 April.
