Women’s health care module
Commences February at Montfort University, Faculty of Health & Life Sciences, School of Nursing and Midwifery 2012; Fridays 9am-1pm
This module is for nurses, midwives and allied health professionals with an interest in women’s health care, who work in both hospital and community settings. The module explores specialist knowledge and practice, and will examine professional ethical and legal issues that impact on women’s health care provision. It covers topics such as anatomy and physiology, care management of specific gynaecological and menstrual disorders, oncology, continence issues, early pregnancy management, reproductive and sexual health, and breast care. This will enable students to develop strategies for the future provision of women’s health in their current area of practice.

Menopause after cancer
Guildford, 12-13 October 2011
In May this year the menopause team at Northwick Park Hospital, Harrow, contributed to the first menopause after cancer study day.
Aimed at nurses working with women who have experienced cancer, the programme included a menopause overview, discussion about menopause after gynae cancer and breast cancer as well as an HRT update, non hormonal therapy options, vaginal atrophy management and a report of our innovative breast cancer menopause symptoms service – a once monthly clinic for women experiencing menopause after cancer.
The study day was very well-evaluated with nurses saying that they found it extremely informative and thought provoking. Feedback from the programme has enabled us to tweak the programme slightly and run it again in spring 2012.
The next two day course for nurses will be held in Guildford on 12-13 October 2011. Programme includes:
• physiology, signs and symptoms
• an introduction to assessment and monitoring
• promoting a healthy menopause
• therapies and treatments, hormonal and non hormonal
• monitoring and case scenarios
• HRT – risks, benefits, side effects
• insulin resistance in women
Aimed at those who regularly see and advise women on issues relating to menopause, it is of particular interest to practice nurses, gynae nurses and sexual health nurses. Others who will find it useful include occupational health nurses, oncology nurses and urogynae nurses.
Accreditation is being sought.For information email Kathy.abernethy@btinternet.com or call 020 8869 2877
