Maria Mooney is Cardiac Rehabilitation and Secondary Prevention Co-ordinator at Belfast City Hospital Trust. As lead nurse, she is responsible for developing the service as well as providing hands-on clinical care for patients.
Qualified in both further and higher education, her teaching remit includes updates for staff and clinical placements for students and nurses on specialist practice courses. She also gives short cardiac courses and specialist practice courses for various organisations. She recently completed the course on independent and supplementary nurse prescribing.
Maria has been in cardiac nursing for 22 years, working in many different areas of the patient journey. She is passionate about improving outcomes and equipping patients with the skills to manage their own condition. At present she is a member of the Big Lottery Project steering group, charged with enhancing cardiac rehabilitation services, and she’s also an active member of the Northern Ireland Cardiac Rehabilitation Nurses Forum.
Her research on services for patients awaiting coronary artery bypass is due to be published shortly in the European Journal of Cardiovascular Nursing.
