Disabled Children's Group

The group, formed in July 1995, to provide a network of support for nurses who work with, or have an interest in, the needs of disabled children and their families.

Purpose

To bring together a range of nurses working with disabled children and their families to improve the quality of services provided through actively engaging in/or leading educational, professional and national activities.

Aims to focus on

Children's needs

  • To promote the rights of disabled children.
  • To advocate a child-centred approach. 
  • To increase understanding of the differing needs of disabled children, both within the profession and at national/policy level.

Professional development

  • Raising professional awareness and knowledge of the needs of disabled children and their families/carers.
  • Facilitating sharing of knowledge, both within nursing and other professionals.
  • Advocating for the inclusion/development of the nursing curriculum to encompass the care of disabled children.
  • Promoting nursing research within this field of practice.
  • Supporting/advising groups and/or individuals in developing practice.
