Paediatric Respiratory Nurses Group

Background information

The Group was formed in 1996 under the leadership of Dorothy Orrell, then paediatric nurse specialist at Alder Hey Hospital in Liverpool. Originally part of the RCN Respiratory Nurses Forum, the Group joined the RCN Paediatric Ambulatory Care Forum in 1999. The Paediatric Respiratory Care Group is very active and is now one of the largest RCN groups, with over 800 members from around the UK.

A large number of members are ward-based or community nurses with a special interest in paediatric respiratory disease. A significant proportion of members are specialist paediatric respiratory nurses.

Purpose

To ensure that the care of children with respiratory disease, regardless of their socio-economic standing or geographical location, is delivered to the highest standard and is evidence-based.

Aims

  • To ensure paediatric respiratory disease is a priority within the NHS.
  • To influence policy decisions on paediatric respiratory disease, both locally and nationally.
  • To provide a forum for paediatric respiratory nurses nationally to disseminate evidence-based guidelines for respiratory disease as they appear or are updated and to discuss research.
  • To liaise with and communicate our perspective to other professional groups, such as the British Paediatric Respiratory Society, the National Asthma Campaign, the National Respiratory Training Centre and the British Lung Foundation.
  • To liaise with and communicate our perspective to the pharmaceutical industry
