Tips from Val Loftus, Skin Cancer Nurse
It's summer and we are all hoping for long warm summer days...
Those of us who enjoy outdoor events and festivals just keep in mind to be sun smart and protect yourselves and others from sunburn. Sunburn is not only unpleasant and spoils your fun it can also lead to future problems and skin cancers in later life. People with fair skin/red hair are more likely to burn however anyone can get sunburnt, so please take a minute to take on board the tips below:
Symptoms
- skin is red and sore
- skin is hot to touch
- in severe cases there may be blisters or peeling of the skin.
Action
- get out of the sun or cover up immediately
- cool the skin with lukewarm water
- drink plenty of fluids - avoid alcohol
- apply a moisturiser to cool and hydrate the skin
- pain relief may be required
- in severe cases seek medical advice.
Remember
- protect young children from UV exposure; babies should be kept out of direct sunlight
- cover up - protect those vulnerable areas of the body
- hats, sunglasses, long sleeves
- apply high sun protection factor 30 or above prior to going out and then twice an hour in normal circumstances.
- use shade – stay out of direct sunlight between 11am – 3pm
- drink plenty of fluids.
