Opening of the Langdon Down Museum of Learning Disability on 28 January 2012

A message from the Museum team:

'The Langdon Down Museum of Learning Disability will be opening on 28 January 2012.

For many years the former Normansfield hospital building in Teddington has been closed apart from audiences visiting the theatre and by special invitation. As it has long been our wish to let the public view the collections, we will now be open at regular times from 28 January.

The museum is now part of a specialist group of London museums of health and medicine focussing on the care of the vulnerable since Victorian times. As well as telling the story of Dr John Langdon Down, Normansfield and the history of learning disability, the museum contains objects from the Royal Earlswood Asylum and artifacts made by James Henry Pullen.

We invite the donation to the museum of objects and materials about Normansfield from those with a previous connection to the hospital. Anyone with memories of life at Normansfield who may wish to contribute to an oral history project later in 2012 is encouraged to contact us.'
