Letter from the Chair: LESLEY WADE (Autumn 2009)

Stepping into the role of acting Chair of the History of Nursing Society, I am well aware that I am "standing on the shoulders of giants".

I can still recall my trepidations as I took my place on the committee the first time, sitting next to the renowned Monica Baly and Peggy Nuttall. I was wrong to be so apprehensive - both doyens gave me nothing but help and support, and I would like to express my thanks to our current committee members for their continued confidence and support for me.

Stepping into Duncan Mitchell's shoes is no easy task (I am a size three, he a little more). However Duncan has agreed for now to stay on the committee and I value his support.

The way ahead

I hope this confirmation will continue as I put my hand on the tiller, navigating between change and continuity. I am aware that many of you are, like myself, awaiting news of reforms and other new governance issues related to our organisation. Therefore I will be attending the Forum Chairs Day at RCN headquarters in the autumn to avail myself of any up-to-date news in this direction.

In a short number of weeks since taking on the new role, my life has been quite busy what with linking nationally, regionally and internationally, taking on the duties of Chair and editing History Info.

Meanwhile, I ask all of our members to support the International Nursing History Conference next September in London. See our events page for an overview and visit the website of the UK Centre for the History of Nursing and Midwifery for the call for abstracts including exact details for submissions.

Did someone once say multitasking is the leitmotiv of our profession!
