Health Workers in Fragile States: new report published

Action for Global Health, a network of European NGOs advocating for greater progress towards the achievement of the health Millennium Development Goals, has produced a short report, Health Workers in Fragile States: The Case for Investment (PDF 0.98 MB).  According to the 2011 World Development Report on Conflict, Security and Development, ‘fragile and conflict affected states are the furthest away from achieving the MDGs’. In its new report, Action for Global Health highlights the fact that ‘the cost of failing to meet the MDG health targets in fragile states will be met in lives’.

Making the case for health system strengthening through supporting the training, recruitment and retention of health workers, the report provides practical examples of well-targeted funding which has led to 'small steps towards big results' in Sierra Leone, Somaliland, Liberia and South Sudan. The report calls for the UK Government to save lives by acting and promoting action within the international community to secure greater investment in improved human resources for health.
