Passionate about global health? Travel abroad with Save the Children and make a difference
As part of its global child survival campaign, Save the Children is recruiting nine British health workers who are passionate about global health. In return for campaigning activity, the charity plans to take the health workers on a fact-finding trip to a county with a high burden of child mortality.
The idea is that health workers are not only essential for providing the health care necessary to improve maternal and child survival, they also play an important role in advocating on behalf of their communities for better access to quality health services.
To this end, Save the Children is looking for people who are:
- passionate about global issues and keen to support women’s and children’s health
- willing to commit some time and energy to speaking out about global health issues and influencing UK and international policies
- well connected with local communities or online platforms (blogs, Twitter, etc.)
- experienced in international issues and travel (desirable but not essential)
- connected with diaspora communities (in particular Nigeria or India - also desirable but not essential)
- available for a week in October/November 2012 to visit a country where Save the Children is running programmes to tour health centres, learn and interact with local health professionals
- keen to campaign locally, nationally and internationally on behalf of health workers and the populations they serve.
In return for a one-year commitment to campaign with Save the Children and its partners for a total of approximately one day per month, successful candidates will receive:
- A one-week trip abroad (in October or November 2012)
- training on campaigning and advocacy
- dedicated support for follow-up activities such as local media work, talks, blogs etc.
- the opportunity to develop relationships with health workers from other countries and to support them in campaigning visits to the UK.
Selection will be in early September. Interested RCN members should email Brie O’Keefe b.okeefe@savethechildren.org.uk with a brief biography using the subject header "Health Worker Campaigners".
