The RCN and Unionlearn

The RCN and Unionlearn have a history of effectively working together in partnership for the benefit of learning representatives throughout the UK. Here are some examples of what is happening:

England

The RCN has implemented several local and national projects in England since 1999. Learn more about the previous and current projects and how you can get involved by viewing The RCN and Unionlearn Projects in England (PPT 538KB).

The current large scale project is entitled Sustaining learning and skills in the workplace; supporting ULRs in developing learners. The steering committee for this project met for the first time on 15 July 2009.

You can keep up to date with the progress of the project by viewing the quarterly project outcome reports and key messages.

Wales

Val Bailey, a Professional Practice Co-ordinator who works for the RCN in Wales, tells us how she has been able to work with unionlearn:

"I work closely with the TUC Learning Services in Wales which gives me access to all other unions involved with Unionlearn. This includes attendance at seminars, forums and conferences. It has been of particular help in the basic skills agenda as many other unions have expertise in this area. I have worked with Basic skills Cymru to consider some of the basic skills problems for our members in Wales. I am also working with NIACE Dysgu Cymru to support overseas nurses and health care assistants on a learning event to celebrate their contribution to nursing.

"I work across all the NHS trusts in Wales where RCN learning representatives are employed. Success stories include seminars, forums and conferences for health care support workers organised by RCN learning representatives. I work closely with the independent sector where RCN learning representatives are employed and I am also working in partnership with one large nursing home in Tenby considering the needs of overseas health care workers.

"Also working closely with Swansea Local Health Board examining the needs of those working in the independent sector in that area and how the Wales Union Learning Fund (WULF) can support them.

"I recently supported a WULF event at Glyndwr University where one of our RCN learning representatives is based."
