Prison Nurses Forum (1175)

The forum was established approximately 10 years ago when more locally employed nurses started joining the prison service in a non-uniformed role.

Purpose

  • To be representative of all prison nurses nationally and within the RCN.

Aims

  • Promote the role of nurses working in custodial settings.
  • Increase awareness of working in prisons as a career opportunity for all nurses.
  • Develop the role of nurses working in prisons.
  • Improve the health of prisoners and of the environment including public health.
  • Develop nursing services for the highly vulnerable prison population.
  • Develop a network of support for nurses working in prisons.
  • Take prison nursing issues forward – for example, NMC, Scottish Parliament, etc.
  • Be a source of advice for colleagues working in prisons in other parts of the world.
  • Agenda for Change support.
