Health Secretary Alan Johnson has announced the introduction of a human papilloma virus (HPV) immunisation programme to routinely vaccinate girls aged 12–13 against cervical cancer, starting from September. Cervarix is the product to be used.

Male hormonal contraception

Professor Richard Anderson has reported on a double-blind placebo-controlled study indicating that a hormonal contraceptive for men that induces spermatogenic suppression can provide effective contraception and is fully reversible. This can be done with high doses of testerone alone or in lower doses it can be combined with progestogen. This was the medication in this study.

SRE Review announced

A new review of sex and relationship education has been outlined by ministers with the aim of improving SRE in both primary and secondary schools. The review will look at how to ensure consistency in teaching, identification and sharing of best practice, use of external professionals, reflecting the views of parents and complementing their roles, referrals to specialist advice, and supporting and encouraging school heads and senior management to provide better leadership on SRE.
