Travel health category launched for Nursing Standard Awards 2009
The Nursing Standard Nurse Awards is an annual national event providing an opportunity to identify outstanding achievement, promote best practice and share important innovations in nursing.
The RCN Travel Health Forum is delighted to announce that a “Travel Health Category”, generously sponsored by GlaxoSmithKline, will be included for the first time in the 2009 competition.
As the number of patients travelling abroad continues to rise, travel health is an increasingly complex and important element of nursing, especially in primary care, the main provider of travel health advice in the UK.
A travel health consultation needs to focus on the health education of the individual traveller, and a thorough pre-travel risk assessment is a key element to delivering tailored advice.
Clearly such consultations take time and require efficient management to be most effective so this category looks to explore how to set up and run effective travel health clinics to provide maximum health benefits for patients.
Category title: Delivering innovation in travel health
Key elements to include:
- pre-travel risk assessment
- providing quality travel health advice to patients
- knowledge of current resources
- supporting patient compliance to complete vaccination courses
- options to maximise practice income.
All qualified nurses, midwives and health visitors registered to practice in the UK and pre-registered students can enter.
The Nursing Standard Nurse Awards 2009 will take place in London in the autumn.
