RCN Stewards
RCN stewards are provided with learning and development opportunities that enable them to support and represent members in the workplace. Their role is to protect workplace employment rights and ensure that members are treated fairly.
With full support from the RCN they:
- Prepare and present cases on behalf of RCN members.
- Support, advise and represent RCN members in cases of grievance, disciplinary procedures, employment conditions and practice such as equal opportunities or job evaluation.
- Contribute to the prevention and resolution of disputes in the workplace.
- Contribute to the formulation and implementation of a collective bargaining strategy.
- Influence positive employment relations, in partnership with employers, and provide information and advice to RCN members on employment rights.

Members look to our stewards for help if they feel discriminated against at work, want to know more about their rights or are worried about poor working practices. If you are unfortunate enough to be injured at work, your steward would be able to advise you on the processes and procedures that you should follow and what help may be available.
Stewards work in partnership with other unions and employers to ensure compliance with good employment practice. This may involve partnership and staff-side meetings and reviewing employment policies.
The RCN provides learning and development opportunities for all stewards. This starts with completing the learning and development programme for newly accredited representatives through to advanced masterclasses and bespoke workshops for experienced representatives.
Where the RCN has a recognition agreement, accredited representatives have a legal entitlement to reasonable paid time off for trade union duties, including learning and development. If your employer does not recognise trade unions and you believe there is sufficient support, contact your RCN regional or national office, or RCN Direct on 0845 772 6100 who can advise you further.
