Time for everyone to celebrate Nurses’ Day

Health care assistants and assistant practitioners (HCAs and APs) are preparing to join their nursing colleagues to celebrate Nurses’ Day on 12 May.
Nurses’ Day, held annually on the anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s birth, is a chance for everyone involved in nursing to celebrate the best of the profession.
The RCN has launched a website to help celebrate on the day. It contains stories collected from nursing staff and patients, posters to download and even a cupcake recipe.
Tanis Hand, the RCN’s HCA and AP Adviser, said: “Nurses’ Day is an opportunity for everyone who is involved in nursing to celebrate and be proud of the work we do.
“Why not take a look at the Nurses’ Day website to share your story and find out how we can all take part.”
Brenda McIlmurray, a member of the RCN HCA and AP committee, said the profession should do more to celebrate Nurses’ Day.
She said: “I don’t think we celebrate Nurses’ Day enough. We are so busy doing our jobs we do not promote ourselves or the job we are doing. Sometimes we need to step back and know that we do a good job and can celebrate that.
“As an HCA, we are all caring members of the nursing team. We’re actually helping somebody at a difficult time and making a positive difference.
“I count myself lucky that I have a job that I love and am privileged to have a job of which I am proud.”
