New look for First Steps for HCAs
Published: 04 February 2013
The RCN’s online induction programme for new health care assistants, First Steps for Health Care Assistants, has a new look and a number of new features.
Improvements to the programme include:
- the introduction of an assessment quiz. When all programme sections have been studied, and the quiz is successfully completed, a certificate of completion is issued for your learning portfolio
- improved accessibility as the programme is now available via mobile devices such as tablets and smartphones.
RCN Health Care Assistant Adviser Tanis Hand said: “We’ve been delighted by the positive feedback First Steps has received since its launch in 2011. The upgraded site retains all the content and features people tell us they like and includes suggestions for making the site even better.”
“First steps” provides individual health care assistants with induction training they can undertake independently or as supplementary material to their employer-provided programme.

The programme was shortlisted for the 2011 e-learning awards and since its launch has received over 6,000 visits every month. Go to www.rcn.org.uk/firststeps
