Core practice module chapter three:Transcultural nursing care of adults
Author: Sue Dyson
Introduction
This module is concerned with the transcultural nursing care of adults and elderly people. The aim of the module is to prepare nurses to provide care for adult and older patients/clients, their carers and others from a diverse ethnic and cultural background in acute care settings.
Learning outcomes
On completion of the module the student should be able to:
- Identify how an understanding of the theoretical basis of transcultural nursing care, including definitions and terms, enhances the quality of care provided and improves the experience of the nursing care received by patients, carers and others from multi-ethnic backgrounds.
- Take part in the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of care in a range of acute care settings where adult and older patients from multi-ethnic backgrounds are located.
- Develop problem-solving skills in the assessment, interpretation and recording of patient problems within the context of transcultural nursing care.
- Develop appropriate interpersonal and communication skills to form professional relationships with members of the interdisciplinary team and therapeutic relationships with adult and older patients, their carers and others, in order to meet the needs of patients from multi-ethnic backgrounds.
- Recognise the importance of promoting equity in patient / client care by fair and anti-discriminatory practice, reflecting the needs of a diverse population.
Module organisation, teaching/learning strategies and resources:
The module refers to other modules in the series where appropriate and to key books, articles and texts where these are needed to supplement learning. The module provides activities and scenarios to facilitate a problem-solving approach and utilises a range of websites to facilitate the integration of theory and practice. The module begins with a section devoted to the theoretical basis of transcultural nursing, in which the language of transcultural nursing is described and defined. The next section considers the use of transcultural nursing models in order to integrate the theory and practice of transcultural nursing for adults and older patients. The final section offers practical suggestions, activities and scenarios to develop problem-solving skills transferable to acute care settings.
