STI awareness
Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are very common and we need to be aware of the possibility that they may be present, even if someone consults us for a different matter. In this section you can find out about STIs, learn from the experiences of two women, and identify where you can find more information. Many STIs cause long term health problems and infertility if they are left untreated. Two key messages are that:
- A risk assessment should be undertaken prior to the offer of screening for sexually transmitted infections, and testing is only undertaken with the client's consent.
- An awareness of window periods in relation to screening for sexually transmitted infections is important to ensure that clients are advised appropriately if repeat testing is necessary.
View the video about 'Rosalyn's story' and use the learning you've gained so far in this section to consider what your response would be if you were the nursing staff member in this situation. To read a transcript of the audio in this video, select the link Rosalyn's story (Word 15KB).
How you can help
The first step is to increase your general knowledge about STIs. In the animated activity below, select each STI in turn, according to how common you think it is relative to the others in the list and see how accurately you ranked them. You will then be able to select each STI to find out more about it.
Now, with Rosalyn's case study in mind, complete the activity that follows to see how you could help as her situation unfolds.
