Travel

Diabetes is not a barrier to travelling, however there are various preparations which may need to be considered before travel.

When travelling abroad it is advisable to pack items in hand luggage. These should include the following:

  • Insulin / oral medication. Storage of insulin is important and should not be put into luggage which is going into the hold of the plane as it will freeze, which will render it ineffective.
  • Glucagon.
  • Syringes and needles.
  • Pen devices.
  • Emergency carbohydrate supply - glucose tablets, drinks and snacks.
  • Identification.
  • Copy of prescription details.
  • It is also advisable to take duplicate items and where possible give these to a travel companion.
  • Security measures may make it necessary and advisable for people with diabetes to carry a letter from their GP explaining their need to take sharp objects into the cabin. A charge may be made for this letter.
